Principal Selection pursuant to KRS 160.345(2)(h)2
SB 12 (2011 General Assembly)
After several attempts in previous legislative sessions to redefine the principal selection process, a compromise was forged allowing superintendents a role in replacing outgoing principals.
SB 12 amends KRS 160.345 regarding principal selection.
*First, the outgoing principal cannot serve on the school council during the principal selection process. Instead, the superintendent, or his/her designee, will serve as the chair of the school council during the principal selection process. This person will have voting rights during the process.
*Second, the school council must have access to all of the applications of those who have the proper certification for the principal position.
*Third, the new principal must be selected on a majority vote of the membership of the school council.
*Lastly, the new amendment to the SBDM law also prohibits any principal who has been removed from a position in the district for cause to be considered for appointment as a principal.
Effective date for the legislation is June 8, 2011
